Protecting Women's Healthcare

Women’s healthcare has historically been underfunded and lacking prioritization by the federal government and the healthcare industry. This is unacceptable. It’s why I have spent my time in Congress working to strengthen accessible and affordable care for women. That includes safeguarding access to contraception and to medications like mifepristone, as well as promoting enhanced screening options for cancers that predominantly affect women.

On the issue of abortion, I have consistently and strongly opposed any effort to establish a national ban. These are complex and deeply personal decisions, and it is imperative that elected officials speak about them with compassion and respect, regardless what their own personal choice or opinion may be.

Below is the work I’m doing to advance women’s health and support families.

Protecting Access to IVF and Fertility Care

This Congress, I’ve led the fight to make fertility treatments more affordable for families who need them. I introduced the IVF Access and Affordability Act, which creates a federal tax credit of up to $20,000 for individuals and $40,000 for couples to help cover the high costs of IVF and other assisted reproductive technologies.

I’ve supported bipartisan efforts to require insurance companies to provide coverage for fertility treatments and ensure an individual’s right to access IVF. I have also hosted events with local hospitals and families to raise awareness about the financial barriers many couples face when trying to get pregnant.

No family should be forced to choose between financial security and the chance to have a child. I’ll keep working to make the dream of parenthood more attainable for families in the Hudson Valley and across the country.

Expanding Early Detection and Maternal Health

Early detection saves lives. That’s why I introduced the Early Access to Screening Act, which would lower the age for free, annual breast cancer screenings under Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance from 40 to 30. Too many young women are diagnosed with breast cancer, and waiting until age 40 can mean missing the opportunity for early detection and intervention.

I’ve also cosponsored other legislation that prioritizes women’s health. This includes the Optimizing Postpartum Outcomes Act of 2025, bipartisan legislation that directs the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to issue guidance supporting coverage of important pelvic health services for women during the prenatal and postpartum periods under Medicaid and CHIP. I am also a supporter of the Connected MOM Act to expand Medicaid coverage for remote health-monitoring tools for pregnant and postpartum women. I am also a cosponsor of the TOTAL Care Act to strengthen obstetric and gynecologic (OB-GYN) care for military service members.

Protecting Women, Children & Survivors

Protecting women and children from violence has always been one of my priorities. That's why I introduced the Paula Bohovesky and Joan D'Alessandro Act, bipartisan legislation named in honor of two young women whose tragic murders devastated families and communities in our region.

The bill would close a gap in federal law by ensuring that offenders who sexually assault and murder any child under the age of 18 are ineligible for parole. No family should have to endure the pain of seeing the person responsible for such a horrific crime released from prison.

I've also continued to support efforts to strengthen protections for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, improve the treatment of women in the criminal justice system, and ensure victims and their families receive the support and justice they deserve.

In the New York State Assembly, I introduced Lindsey’s Law to strengthen protections for whistleblowers who report sexual harassment, and increase penalties for public officials who retaliate against victims. I’ve continued to support efforts that protect women from violence, improve the treatment of women in the criminal justice system, and ensure survivors have the support they need.

I’ve also been proud to cosponsor the bipartisan DEFIANCE Act, which would give survivors of non-consensual deepfake pornography and intimate digital forgeries the right to take legal action against those who create and distribute this material. No one should have their image exploited without consent, and survivors deserve clear pathways to justice.

Women’s health and family support should never be driven by extremism from either side. I’ll continue fighting for practical solutions that expand access to care, protect fertility treatments, strengthen early detection, support mothers, and ensure every woman in the Hudson Valley can get the healthcare and support she deserves.
