Lawler Sends Open Letter to The Haitian Community of New York Following Court Decision Halting TPS Termination

Washington, D.C. - 2/3/26… Today, Congressman Mike Lawler sent a letter to New York’s Haitian community reaffirming his continued support for extending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti, following a federal court decision halting the Administration’s plan to terminate protections for more than 350,000 Haitians living in the United States. The ruling blocks the Department of Homeland Security from ending TPS for Haiti amid escalating violence and humanitarian instability that has displaced more than 1.4 million people.

“From day one, I’ve stood with New York’s Haitian community and consistently pressed the Administration to extend Temporary Protected Status for Haiti. Haitian TPS holders are essential to our healthcare system, our transit workforce, and our small businesses across the Hudson Valley. While a recent federal court’s decision provides temporary relief, my advocacy will continue until there is a durable, humane solution that reflects the realities on the ground in Haiti and the indispensable role this community plays here in New York. This will ultimately support Haiti’s move toward stability and free, fair democratic elections,” wrote Congressman Lawler.
