Lawler Introduces Bill to Strengthen Accountability for Public Housing Agencies

Washington, D.C. - 1/16/26… Today, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) introduced the Improving Public Housing Agency Accountability Act, legislation that requires annual reports on key details of troubled public housing, including compliance with the law, the physical and financial state of the housing, and recommendations to restore these facilities. The bill will ensure proper oversight is being conducted and reforms enacted for the residents of these housing authorities.

“For decades, public housing agencies have failed many families, and oversight mechanisms have fallen short. This legislation ensures that when a federal monitor or receiver is appointed, their work is transparent and subject to rigorous review, giving Congress the tools to hold these agencies accountable and make sure residents are not left in unsafe or substandard housing,” said Congressman Lawler.

This legislation was included in the Housing for the 21st Century Act, a broader housing affordability package passed by the House Financial Services Committee on December 17th, 2025.
