Lawler Calls on Democratic Colleagues to Put People Over Politics in Stop Gap Vote

Washington, D.C. – 9/19/25… Today, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) issued the following statement in response to Democratic leaders signaling opposition to the House Republicans' continuing resolution: “In the quite recent past, many of my Democratic colleagues, namely New Yorkers like Chuck Schumer, AOC, and Hakeem Jeffries, have warned that a government shutdown would devastate American families, seniors, veterans, and our economy. On that, we agree. So here’s my question: if you truly believe a shutdown is so harmful, why are you now threatening to vote against the very bill that prevents one? I was elected to govern responsibly, to keep the lights on, pay our troops, and protect the people I represent in the Hudson Valley. That’s what this stopgap bill does. If Democrats meant a word of what they’ve been saying, they’ll join us to keep the government open instead of playing politics with people’s livelihoods.” Congressman Lawler is one of the most bipartisan members of Congress and represents New York's 17th Congressional District, which is just north of New York City and contains all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties. He was rated the most effective freshman lawmaker in the 118th Congress, 8th overall, surpassing dozens of committee chairs. ### |
