Lawler Marks Fentanyl Awareness Day With Legislation Charging Traffickers With Attempted Murder

Washington, D.C. – 8/25/25… Today, Congressman Mike Lawler introduced the Fentanyl Kills Act, which adds to the U.S. criminal code that any individual who is found to have trafficked fentanyl shall be deemed to have attempted to perpetrate murder. National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day is on August 21 every year, initially established in 2022 to honor the lives lost to fentanyl-related overdoses and support families and communities impacted by the crisis.

“Those who traffic fentanyl know exactly what harm is done by the drug and the priceless cost of lives taken by the deadly substance. Too many families in New York and across America have suffered the unimaginable loss of a loved one to fentanyl. The Fentanyl Kills Act is about accountability. It’s about making sure that those who profit off the destruction of our children, our neighbors, and our communities pay a price equal to the devastation they cause,” said Congressman Lawler.

Congressman Lawler is one of the most bipartisan members of Congress and represents New York's 17th Congressional District, which is just north of New York City and contains all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties. He was rated the most effective freshman lawmaker in the 118th Congress, 8th overall, surpassing dozens of committee chairs.
