Congressman Lawler Condemns Schumer For Risking Government Shutdown

Pearl River, N.Y. - 3/13/2025… Today, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) issued a scathing rebuke of Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, for rejecting the House-passed continuing resolution and pushing the nation toward a government shutdown. Lawler, who has consistently voted for every government funding bill regardless of the president, called out Democrats for their hypocrisy and reckless political games.

“Chuck Schumer is playing politics with Americans’ lives by rejecting a continuing resolution that keeps the government open. His hypocrisy could not be clearer. After lambasting shutdowns in 2024, Chuck Schumer is now risking VA closures, frozen nutrition programs, and delayed military benefits,” said Congressman Mike Lawler, citing a post on X from Senator Schumer on programs that would be impacted by a government shutdown.

Rep. Jared Golden (ME-02), the lone Democrat who supported the House GOP-led continuing resolution, criticized his party’s “messaging gimmicks," and confirmed in a statement shortly after the vote that it does not cut veterans care and accused his colleagues of “using misdirection to justify a vote.”

Lawler pointed to this division, noting Democrats’ previous opposition to shutdowns, yet now risk economic disruption to financial markets and harm to Hudson Valley families and veterans.

“New Yorkers deserve stability, not partisan chaos,” Congressman Lawler concluded.

Congressman Lawler is one of the most bipartisan members of Congress and represents New York's 17th Congressional District, which is just north of New York City and contains all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
