Lawler and Torres Introduce Bill to Posthumously Honor NY-17’s James Earl Jones with Congressional Gold Medal

Washington, D.C. - 3/7/2025… Today, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) and Ritchie Torres (NY-15) reintroduced legislation to honor the late James Earl Jones, the legendary actor, philanthropist, and voice behind some of the most iconic characters in cinematic history, with a Congressional Gold Medal. The James Earl Jones Congressional Gold Medal Act recognizes his extraordinary contributions to American arts and culture, as well as his service to the nation.

Born in Mississippi and raised by his grandparents in Michigan, Jones’ journey was one of perseverance and talent. Encouraged by his high school English teacher, Donald Crouch, he discovered his love for poetry and the power of his own voice – helping him overcome a childhood stutter.

He went on to study at the University of Michigan, initially pursuing pre-med before finding his true calling in drama. After graduating in 1955 and serving in the U.S. Army post-Korean War, Jones moved to New York City, where he trained at the American Theatre Wing while taking on various jobs to support himself.

His career flourished on stage and screen, from an early breakthrough performance as Othello at the Ramsdell Theatre to earning international fame as the voice of Darth Vader in Star Wars and Mufasa in The Lion King.

Over the decades, his powerful performances in films like Field of Dreams and The Hunt for Red October further cemented his legacy. With an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) to his name, Jones remained one of the most celebrated actors of all time, breaking barriers and inspiring generations.

“James Earl Jones was a national treasure – an artist whose voice and presence have left his mark on American culture. Beyond his legendary career, he broke barriers, inspired generations, and served our country with honor. As a proud constituent of New York’s 17th District, it is only fitting that he posthumously receives one of our nation’s highest honors, and I am proud to lead the effort to award him the Congressional Gold Medal," said Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17).

“James Earl Jones is the pinnacle of Black American excellence. He helped pave the way for our community in Hollywood and delivered historic performances like Darth Vader to Mufasa along the way,” said Congressman Ritchie Torres (NY-15). “The American people owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Jones for his tireless devotion to his craft, and I am proud to join my colleagues in introducing legislation that would recognize his achievements with a Congressional Gold Medal.

During the 118th Congress, the James Earl Jones Congressional Gold Medal Act was co-led by Congressman Torres and former Congressman Marc Molinaro of New York’s 19th Congressional District and was cosponsored by 194 U.S. representatives.

Congressman Lawler is one of the most bipartisan members of Congress and represents New York's 17th Congressional District, which is just north of New York City and contains all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
