Congressman Lawler Urges Social Security Administration to Keep White Plains Hearing Office Open

Washington, D.C. – 3/4/2025… Today, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) and George Latimer (NY-16) sent a letter calling on the Social Security Administration (SSA) to reverse its December 2024 decision to close the White Plains Office of Hearings Operations. This is the only Social Security Hearing Office in the Hudson Valley, and closing it would force some constituents to drive hours for hearings.

“According to the SSA’s Regional Public Affairs Office in New York, the White Plains office is closing because the landlord is not interested in renewing the lease, and SSA opted to close the office rather than find a suitable alternate location. This is a laughable course of action,” wrote the lawmakers.

“There is plenty of available office space in the White Plains and surrounding areas, including space that has been offered by the Westchester County government. The decision to close shop without so much as looking for a new space is an abandonment of Hudson Valley residents seeking the Social Security benefits that they have earned,” concluded the lawmakers.

This letter follows up several statements from New York officials condemning this closure and urging the continuation of this vital service in the Hudson Valley.

Congressman Lawler is one of the most bipartisan members of Congress and represents New York's 17th Congressional District, which is just north of New York City and contains all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
