Congressmen Lawler, Ryan, Molinaro, and Bowman Pen Bipartisan Letter to Holtec International Raising Concerns with Decommissioning Process at Indian Point

Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17), Congressman Pat Ryan (NY-18), Congressman Marc Molinaro (NY-19), and Congressman Jamaal Bowman (NY-16) sent a bipartisan letter to Holtec International raising concerns with the decommissioning process at Indian Point. "I have been in contact with Holtec International since the beginning of my term regarding their plans to dispose of the leftover tritium water at Indian Point," said Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17). "While Holtec International initially promised to continue to engage with state and local elected officials and community leaders, in recent weeks, members of elected bodies and the general public have been stonewalled." "Holtec's most recent effort to accelerate their timeline for dumping tritium water in the Hudson River was galling and was wisely rolled back," concluded Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17). "The Hudson River is the pearl of the Hudson Valley, and the prospect of a massive dumping of radioactive water is a grave threat against it that should be treated as such. I encourage Holtec to operate with transparency and come to a solution that avoids polluting the river so many millions of New Yorkers reside near." "It is an encouraging first step that Holtec has decided to delay its hastily scheduled plan to release millions of gallons of radioactive wastewater into the Hudson River, but it is nowhere near enough,” said Representative Pat Ryan (NY-18). “For decades, huge corporations have polluted the river at will. That ends now. I will keep fighting to make sure Holtec operates with transparency and discusses solutions with all stakeholders. The safety of Hudson Valley families and the safety of the environment are more important than Holtec’s profits.” "Today, I join a bipartisan delegation that represents the Hudson Valley to urge Holtec to engage with local leaders and the community before it carries out any plan to discharge tritium water from Indian Point Energy Center into the Hudson River," said Congressman Marc Molinaro (NY-19). "I’m a proud son of the Hudson Valley and have undertaken bipartisan efforts to restore the Hudson River and protect access to clean drinking water. Any action from Holtec must be in line with these priorities." “Rushing to dump 1 million pounds of radioactive water into a river with a basin home to more than 8 million people should not be an option,”said Congressman Jamaal Bowman Ed.D. (NY-16). "Nuclear or any chemical plants shouldn’t be allowed to dump their waste into our communities' rivers no matter the amount – especially when the communities impacted are not consulted. We cannot risk the health of our communities. Dumping the radioactive water into the Hudson River isn’t Holtec’s only option – the water can be stored at the facility where it would take just over 24 years for the tritium to decay. They’re trying to take the easy way out, but our communities are speaking out and Holtec needs to listen.” New York's 17th Congressional District is just north of New York City and contains all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester County. |
