CONGRESSMAN LAWLER INTRODUCES BIPARTISAN LEGISLATION TO MAKE SEPTEMBER 11TH A FEDERAL HOLIDAY
Washington, D.C.,
March 29, 2023
Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) released the following statement after introducing the September 11th Day of Remembrance Act, which would enshrine September 11th as a federal holiday, ensuring that we never forget the impact and consequences of that fateful day. Congressman Lawler is joined by 3 original co-sponsors on the bill, Rep. Pat Ryan (D, NY-18), Rep. Anthony D'Esposito (R, NY-4), and Rep. David Tone (D, MD-6). "As I did in the New York State Assembly, I am introducing legislation today that would enshrine September 11th as a federal holiday," said Representative Mike Lawler."September 11th had a profound impact on our nation, but particularly impacted the residents of the 17th Congressional District. Thousands of families have faced the repercussions of that day, especially the families of those who worked tirelessly on the pile, trying to find survivors and helping other families find closure." "I'm proud to introduce this legislation today to help honor, remember, and commemorate all those who have lost their lives as a result of September 11th, and I will continue to fight for the survivors in every way I can," concluded Representative Mike Lawler. "We will never forget September 11th, and we must never cease fighting for those who gave so much in the wake of this tragedy." “I was in my second year at West Point on September 11th, 2001. All of us cadets swore to never forget the heroes we lost that day – this country swore to never forget,” said Representative Pat Ryan. “This legislation ensures the firefighters, policemen, paramedics and everyday citizens, many from the Hudson Valley, who died serving this country that early September morning or whose health was impacted in the recovery will always be remembered. To those who lost loved ones that day know this: I will never stop fighting on your behalf." “As a retired NYPD Detective who served in the years following 9/11, I continue to see the long-term ramifications of the attack on New York City’s first responders, 9/11 survivors, local community members, and the loved ones of those lost on that tragic day,” said Representative Anthony D’Esposito. “Designating September 11th as a federal holiday would establish a time for Americans to come together and honor those lost during the attack as well as recognize the bravery of the first responders who rushed into danger to save lives.” “We all remember where we were that morning on September 11, 2001, when our country was so brutally attacked, and thousands of innocent people were killed. Representing a state with public servants who worked at the Pentagon and our Capitol that day, and with many still working there today, this issue is close to home,” said Congressman David Trone.“On every anniversary of that day, our nation deserves to mourn those lost and honor our first responders who selflessly stepped up to help their fellow Americans. It’s time we make September 11th a federal holiday – this legislation does just that.” New York’s 17th District, which includes all or parts of Rockland, Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess counties, is a suburban district located just north of New York City. |
