Putnam County Congressman Mike Lawler delivered good news to municipalities throughout the county last Thursday in the form of federal dollars assuring clean drinking water, mitigating flooding, revitalizing downtown communities, providing critical resources for law enforcement, improving pedestrian safety and creating union jobs throughout the 17th Congressional District.

With State Assemblyman Matt Slater, County Executive Kevin Byrne, Putnam’s Commissioner of Planning Barbara Barosa, Carmel Supervisor Mike Cazzari, Kent Supervisor Jaime McGlasson, Southeast Supervisor Nick Durante, Putnam Valley Supervisor Jackie Annabi and Brewster Mayor James Schoenig in attendance, Lawler told a news conference attended by a lone reporter: “When I was elected to represent this district, I promised that I would work with my partners at every level of government to prioritize the needs of our residents. This is exactly what we have done and I am happy to report securing $10 million in projects for each township across Putnam.”

Lawler identified the projects as $7.5 million for sidewalk and pedestrian safety improvements; $2 million for water quality improvements in the Town of Carmel, helping Mahopac maintain its pristine lake; $1.5 million for a new pump station for the Oregon Corners Sewer District in Putnam Valley and $1.23 million for dam rehabilitation in Kent. Lawler said: “Projects like these are great examples of what can be accomplished when politics are put aside and we focus on the needs of our constituents.”

County Executive Byrne noted pedestrian walkways “affect every community within our county since they improve walkability and quality of life.”

Assemblyman Slater called the infusion of funds a “great day for Putnam County since thanks to our Congressman, we are taking the burden off local taxpayers to pay for these important and much needed projects.”

Supervisor Cazzari reflected that the improvements to be made will have a “lasting positive impact on all residents of Putnam County.”

Supervisor Annabi and Supervisor McGlasson, along with the others in attendance, also commended Lawler for his “significant investment in Putnam County.”
