Lawler, Keating, and Ross Introduce Resolution in Support of a Democratic Moldova

Washington, D.C. – 2/24/23... Today, Congressman Mike Lawler, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, along with Reps. Bill Keating (MA-09) and Deb Ross (NC-02), who are Co-Chairs of the Congressional Moldova Caucus, introduced a bipartisan resolution recognizing their demonstrated commitment to advancing democracy, strengthening civil society, and European integration in the face of Russia’s illegal and full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Congressman Lawler's wife is an immigrant from Moldova and many members of her family still live in the Eastern European country.

“Last week the world learned from Moldovan President Maia Sandu herself of a Russian-lead plot to overthrow the democratic leadership in Moldova. This most recent news from the region showcases the real danger that front line countries who have supported the Ukrainian fight for freedom face from Russia. Vladimir Putin’s aims reach farther than just Ukraine and, as is evident by this most recent attack, he has his sights set on destabilizing Europe and the transatlantic alliance. In response, we must stand steadfast in our support of all democratic leaders fighting in the face of Russian aggression," said the lawmakers.

This resolution comes at a pivotal moment as Russia’s war of aggression has proven to directly threaten those fragile democracies on the border of Ukraine. Specifically, last week a Russian-lead plot to destabilize democracy in Moldova was discovered and revealed by democratic President Maia Sandu. In response, these lawmakers believe now is the time for the United States to recommit America’s support to an independent, democratic and free Moldova.
