LAWLER: NEW YORK HAS 170,000 REASONS TO CHANGE DISASTROUS CASHLESS BAIL LAW
New York, NY,
February 13, 2023
Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) released the following statement after news broke that New York City saw its highest level of felony crime since 2006, with over 170,000 felonies having been recorded in 2022. “I have been saying for years that cashless bail is an unmitigated disaster and time and again the numbers have proven me right,” said Rep. Lawler. “Just today, we learned that felony crimes in New York City hit their highest levels since 2006.” “People claiming that the ‘bad old days’ will never return are being proven wrong by the data once more,” continued Rep. Lawler. “We must reform our broken criminal justice system and ensure we are protecting citizens and victims, not coddling criminals.” “Governor Hochul and the New York State Legislature have 170,000 reasons to change the disastrous cashless bail law,” concluded Rep. Lawler. New York’s 17th District, which includes all or parts of Rockland, Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess counties, is a suburban district located just north of New York City. |
