Congressman Lawler Issues Statement in Response to U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle's Resignation

Today, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) issued the following statement in response to U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle's resignation. The resignation comes after reports of numerous security failures surrounding the attempted assassination of former President Trump, including reports that the shooter was spotted on the roof twenty minutes before firing. Yesterday, Director Cheatle addressed a turbulent House Oversight Committee hearing, during which she faced bipartisan scrutiny and calls to resign.

"Director Cheatle's resignation is ten days overdue and does not absolve her or her agency's failures," said Congressman Lawler. "A more thorough investigation is needed to ensure full accountability. Our democracy came within inches of being irrevocably changed, and a father lost his life shielding his family from bullets. We now know this tragedy may have been preventable, and we must ensure it never happens again."

Congressman Lawler is one of the most bipartisan members of the 118th Congress and represents New York's 17th Congressional District, which is just north of New York City and contains all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
