Congressman Lawler Introduces Legislation to Award Congressional Gold Medal to NY-17 Constituent James Earl Jones

Today, on Star Wars Day (May the Fourth), Congressman Lawler introduced legislation to honor James Earl Jones, esteemed actor, philanthropist, and voice to legendary characters like Darth Vader and Mufasa, with a Congressional Gold Medal. The James Earl Jones Congressional Gold Medal Act is co-sponsored by Representatives Ritchie Torres (D,NY-15) and Marc Molinaro (R,NY-19).

James Earl Jones was raised by his grandparents in Michigan after relocating from Mississippi during the Great Migration. Through the encouragement of his high school English teacher, Donald Crouch, who recognized his potential in writing poetry, Jones found a voice and confidence that helped him overcome his initial reticence to speak.

Jones' academic path led him to the University of Michigan, where he switched his focus from pre-med to drama, a decision that would shape his entire career. After graduating in 1955, his brief military service post-Korean War was followed by a move to New York to study at the American Theatre Wing. Here, he supported himself with various odd jobs while beginning what would be a legendary acting career. His early success on stage was soon complemented by his work in television and film, highlighted by a significant early role as Othello at the Ramsdell Theatre.

James Earl Jones’ illustrious career continued with iconic roles such as the voice of Darth Vader in "Star Wars" and Mufasa in Disney's "The Lion King," roles that made him a cultural icon. His film career included diverse roles in critically acclaimed films like "Field of Dreams" and "The Hunt for Red October." Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Jones remained a dynamic figure in the arts, earning continued acclaim on Broadway and achieving the rare EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards). His enduring contributions across a range of mediums highlight a career characterized by a unique vocal presence and profound depth in performance.

"As a devoted fan of history, I’m deeply honored to receive an award that dates back to America’s founding and over recent years, has increasingly recognized lesser-known individuals whose courage and perseverance extends to many areas of our society. I hope this honor will underscore the importance of the performing arts to our culture--and our future as a nation," said James Earl Jones. "On a more personal note, I want to thank Congressman Lawler and his staff for initiating this honor."

"James Earl Jones shattered racial barriers, served our country in the United States Army, and warmed the hearts of hundreds of millions with his countless roles from the theater stage to the movie screen," said Congressman Lawler (NY-17). "I'm honored to count him as one of my constituents in New York's 17th District and it gives me great honor to introduce legislation recognizing his many contributions to our country with a Congressional Gold Medal."

"While we may have disagreed on his participation in the Empire's quest to build multiple Death Stars, I am thankful to represent him in Congress and look forward to awarding him with this great honor," concluded Congressman Lawler. "Who says Darth Vader can't be the good guy for once?"

“James Earl Jones is the pinnacle of Black American excellence. He helped pave the way for our community in Hollywood and delivered historic performances like Darth Vader to Mufasa along the way" said Congressman Torres (NY-15). "The American people owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Jones for his tireless devotion to his craft, and I am proud to join my colleagues in introducing legislation that would recognize his achievements with a Congressional Gold Medal.”

“There’s no Luke Skywalker (my favorite character) without Darth Vader, and no Darth Vader without the genius of James Earl Jones," said Congressman Molinaro (NY-19). "He’s truly an icon who deserves this recognition for his tremendous acting career and work to break down racial barriers."

New York's 17th Congressional District is just north of New York City and contains all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
